RBS Bristol - 18 Jun 2008

Supplying the Defence Sector - Are you fit for Business?

On 18 June 2008, the Council of Defence Advisers comprising: Royal Bank of Scotland, West of England Aerospace Forum, Strategic Planning Solutions, Veale Wasbrough and Target Finance held the first in a series of seminars to provide professional, practical advice for companies in the southwest seeking to sell into the defence sector.  With contracts placed annually by the MOD amounting to some £16 bn and with over 250,000 service personnel to support, there is great opportunities for southwest based companies to get involved.

The oversubscribed event was hosted at RBS' Bristol Head Office and provided all the attendees with real insights into how to position themselves both strategically and operationally either to do business directly with the MOD or more usually through MOD prime contractors, in providing goods and services to our military servicemen and women.  Such issues as supplying integral parts of weapon systems to the food, clothing, sports articles and even window cleaning services that are needed by the large number of military bases throughout the South West were discussed.  The audience were most appreciative of the "take-away" package of genuine solutions to frequently faced problems.

Feedback from the event was unusually frank and overwhelmingly complimentary, indicating a real need to repeat the seminar, reaching out to more of the southwest companies who have excellent products that can be of benefit to the armed services.  James Short of SPS said after the seminar: "Our aim of providing an unmissable event that helps southwest companies maximise their opportunities to expand into the defence sector was wholly met, now we need to do even better at the next event!"

The next seminar in the series will be hosted again by RBS but this time in Swindon (in the Autumn) and will be reaching out to all those in the SME community who thought that selling to the MOD was in the "all-too-difficult" category.  For more information please contact Mike Teasdale (Chairman CODA) or James Short (Keynote presenter) on 0845 652 6371

John Kirwan - Partner SPS South-West

BEN Event - Bristol School of Chemistry 13th March 2008
Styles of Entrepreunial Leadership

John Kirwan was one of four guest speakers at this prestigious BEN event, attended by around 70 delegates, with a talk entitled “Living Leadership”. John has been fortunate in his career to work with many inspirational leaders whether as colleagues or entrepreneurs setting up businesses or senior executives in large corporates. Effective leaders need many skills but, John has observed, the 7 key activities they excel in that make them so successful are:

· Setting and renewing purposes – working not to goals, but through goals;
· Creating positive energy in their people;
· Staying relentlessly focused;
· And also remaining open;
· Keeping the self-talk - self-image - performance cycle positive
· Being Wizards – “As a man thinketh, so he is-eth!”
· Aiming high

For a third-party independent account of the BEN event, including John’s talk, please see: http://www.jbsh.co.uk/2008/03/15/lessons-in-entrepreneurial-leadership/
